Finding Furniture After a Relocation
Quite often people see moving and relocating as a chance to eliminate clutter from their lives and “wipe the slate clean”. Sometimes this means they either sell or leave behind bulkier pieces of furniture. Unfortunately, it also means they will eventually have to replace them somehow.
Whether someone needs new furniture because they eliminated it during a move, or if they need it because they relocated overseas or at a great distance, there are many ways to find furnishings without breaking the budget.
In almost every country on the planet there are shops that sell second hand or used merchandise. Anyone on a tight budget should make a habit of visiting as many as possible and getting to know the clerks and owners. They can tell them what they are looking for and ask them to let them know if anything of interest arrives. Usually such an effort yields good results and can often lead to the shop owner keeping out a watchful eye for any other items that they think might be appealing.
Another good method for acquiring inexpensive furnishings is through the frequent visit to yard and estate sales. Many interior decorators use the same tactic and a bargain hunter may find they are in direct competition for a particular end table or chair with these individuals.
There are also many “rent to own” opportunities for someone looking to acquire an entire suite of furnishings at a reasonable rate. The best part about such arrangements is that they are not generally viewed as “credit” accounts and tend to have no impact on a consumer’s ability to access additional credit or funding. Many rent-to-own opportunities also make electronics and appliances available as well, and this can be the best option for someone temporarily relocating or with a tighter budget.
Outright purchase of furnishing is always a realistic option, but the decision to buy all new furnishings should be based on the amount of time to be spent in the new location. If the relocation is permanent, by all means invest in some nicer pieces that will suit your needs and please the eye. If, however, the relocation is only temporary, even if it is to be for more than a year, the purchase may result in a financial loss.
Finally, many people use some of the interesting websites that employ “freecycle” techniques which are usually swapping of one item or service for another item or service. You may find someone interested in swapping a nice armchair for an old stationary bike.
